Ephemerality
the concept of things being transitory, existing only briefly
I've become obsessed with the ephemeral recently. How some things are just meant to exist in a single moment in time. With the only proof of existence being a single memory. Can we even trust our memories?
I've always been an advocate for archiving things. Whether it's physical or digital, I believe that something should always exist in one form or another so that it may be preserved to look back on, for worse, or for better. To look back on wistfully or regretfully. To show someone what was. Such things deserve to be preserved.
Except that isn't always the case. Physical records will deteriorate with time. Even digital records can be lost if not preserved correctly.
For the better part of 2 years, I've been thinking about a website that hasn't existed for the last few years. A site that heavily inspired this very blog. I figured it was lost to time, and yet, after digging deep through the archives, I was able to find a single post that was preserved. It's a beautiful record of a moment set in time, lightning in a bottle. Unfortunately, it wasn't what I was looking for, but I think it's better that way. This way, the memory of what was is preserved as the best version of itself. Sure I may eventually forget about it down the line, but some things are only meant to exist as a memory.
